Whenever we’ve visited a workshop, or spoke to any set builders, scenics or prop makers, to talk about what more sustainable products we could offer – there was a common plea for a strong, plastic-free ‘Eco Glue’. We thought surely there must be an easy alternative by now that could do the job but this proved quite the challenge. Commercial space travel, AI taking over people’s jobs, driverless cars yet it seems that a bio-based PVA is a step too far.
We didn’t want to give up however, so we can now offer a 40-60% bio-based epoxy resin for heavy duty bonding and this starch based glue for light applications for bonding lightweight materials – like Dekozell, textiles, paper & cardboard. In testing, we’ve also made paint using this glue powder mixed with dry pigments to make a completely plastic free (but temporary) paint that can be mixed up as needed.
Collall Glue Powder is made from plant based Carboxymethylcellulose which is derived from plants and often used as a food additive or in cosmetics. Incidentally, it’s also the main ingredient in wallpaper paste – except wallpaper paste contains lots of preservative nasties.
To use mix 1 part powder to 4 parts water (or 16 g of powder per litre of water). Stir well until powder is fully dissolved and let it sit for a few minutes to thicken. Clean up with water
To increase durability you can mix in PVA to increase durability.
As there are no preservatives in this glue, it has a limited shelf life in its liquid state.
